Dehydration Synthesis

Dehydration synthesis, also known as a condensation reaction, is a chemical process by which monomers are joined together to form polymers. During this reaction, a water molecule is removed for every bond formed between monomers. This process is essential for the formation of macromolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. In proteins, dehydration synthesis joins amino acids through peptide bonds, while in carbohydrates, monosaccharides are linked to form polysaccharides.
