Period

In simple harmonic motion, period is the time it takes for the system to complete 1 cycle or oscillation. Period is a scalar, represented with the variable T{T}, and measured in seconds (s). In a spring oscillation, the period of oscillation can be defined with the equation below.

Ts=2πmkT_s=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{m}{k}}
  • Ts{T_s} represents period of oscillation in a spring oscillation
  • m{m} is the mass of the object attached to the end of the spring
  • k{k} is the spring’s spring constant

A similar equation also exists for the period of oscillation in a pendulum oscillation but with the length of the string and gravity instead.

Tp=2πlgT_p=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{l}{g}}
  • Tp{T_p} represents period of oscillation in a pendulum oscillation
  • l{l} is the length of the string the object is attached to
  • g{g} is acceleration due to gravity
