Refraction

Refraction happens when light passes through one material (or medium) to another and bends. For example, think about how a straw in a glass of water seems to be bent. This happens because when light enters a denser medium, it has to slow down. This is a result of light wanting to take the shortest possible path to go from point a to point b.
