Computing the LSRL from Summary Statistics

Given xˉ{\bar{x}}, yˉ{\bar{y}}, sx{s_x}, sy{s_y}, and r{r}, you can compute the LSRL:

Step 1: Compute the slope:
b=r⋅sysxb = r \cdot \frac{s_y}{s_x}
Step 2: Compute the y-intercept:
a=yˉ−bxˉa = \bar{y} - b\bar{x}
Step 3: Write the equation:
y^=a+bx\hat{y} = a + bx
Example: xˉ=10{\bar{x} = 10}, yˉ=35{\bar{y} = 35}, sx=2{s_x = 2}, sy=8{s_y = 8}, r=0.75{r = 0.75}
b=0.75⋅82=3.0b = 0.75 \cdot \frac{8}{2} = 3.0
a=35−3.0(10)=35−30=5a = 35 - 3.0(10) = 35 - 30 = 5
y^=5+3x\hat{y} = 5 + 3x

Verification: Plug in x=xˉ=10{x = \bar{x} = 10}: y^=5+3(10)=35=yˉ{\hat{y} = 5 + 3(10) = 35 = \bar{y}} ✓
