Atomic Structure

Everything we see around us is made up of atoms. But what are they? Atoms are tiny particles, that are basic units of matter, made of even smaller subatomic particles. These subatomic particles are called protons, electrons, and neutrons. In the center of an atom is a nucleus composed mainly of protons and neutrons, surrounding the nucleus is a cloud of electrons. The electron cloud of an atom can be up to 100,000x larger than its nucleus and makes up most of the atom's volume but the majority of an atom's mass resides in the nucleus.
