Redox Reactions

A redox reaction is a reaction in which two processes happen simultaneously: reduction and oxidation (hence the expanded name: reduction-oxidation reaction). Put simply, reduction is the gaining of electrons, or the reduction of charge; while oxidation is the loss of electrons—the increase of charge. So, a redox reaction consists of a transfer of electrons that constitutes these two processes.
