Separation of Homologous Chromosomes

Meiosis generates genetic diversity through the separation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis I. In this stage, the chromosomes from both the mother and father are divided between two gametes. Each gamete ends up with a haploid set of chromosomes, containing one chromosome from each homologous pair. This halving of the chromosome number, along with the random distribution of maternal and paternal chromosomes into different gametes, ensures that each gamete is genetically unique.
