How the Phenotype of an Organism is Determined by Its Genotype

The genotype of an organism refers to its genetic makeup—the specific set of alleles inherited from its parents. The phenotype, which is the observable physical and biochemical traits of an organism, is determined by the interactions between the genotype and the environment. The genotype provides the instructions for building proteins, which are the molecular machines that carry out functions within cells. These proteins ultimately give rise to the organism's phenotype.
