Differences in Gene Expression and Their Role in Phenotypic Variation

Gene expression is the process through which information from a gene is used to produce a functional product, typically a protein. Differences in the expression of genes are a major factor contributing to phenotypic differences between organisms. The regulation of gene expression involves complex mechanisms that can vary in response to internal and external signals. These regulatory mechanisms determine which genes are expressed, when they are expressed, and at what levels, ultimately influencing the traits and behaviors of organisms.
