Population Density and Resource Availability

Population density refers to the number of individuals within a given area or volume. It is intricately tied to resource availability in the environment. When the density of a population increases, individuals must compete for finite resources such as food, water, shelter, and space. If resource availability cannot support the population, growth may slow, and the population may decline due to starvation, increased competition, or other stressors. Conversely, in environments with abundant resources, population density can increase rapidly, leading to overcrowding and resource depletion.
