Weak Acids and Bases

Similar to other reactions, acid-base reactions have dynamic equilibria. The equilibrium constant for the first dissociation of an acid is known as Ka{K_a}, and the constant for a base is known as Kb{K_b}. Similar to all other equilibrium constants, these only change with temperature.

For a reaction, {HA + H_2O ⇆ A– + H_3O^+}
Ka = ([A–][H3O+])/[HA]
And for a reaction, {B + H_2O ⇆ BH+ + OH^–}:
Kb = ([BH+][OH–])/[B]
