Tilling
Tilling is the mechanical turning of soil to prepare for planting and control weeds. It loosens topsoil, breaks up organic matter, exposes soil to wind and water erosion, releases stored CO₂, and damages soil structure. No-till and reduced-till agriculture (covered in 5.15) are sustainable alternatives.
