Capacitors

Just like resistors, when a circuit has multiple capacitors, they can all be treated as one capacitor with an equivalent capacitance. As you have more capacitors in series, effectively what's happening is the distance between the plates is increasing, since the internal plates have charges that cancel each other out. This means that the more capacitors you have in series, the equivalent capacitance will decrease, and can be found by adding the inverses of the capacitance of each capacitor.

1Ceq,s=∑i1Ci\frac{1}{C_{eq, s}}=\sum_{i} \frac{1}{C_i}
  • Ceq,s{C_{eq,s}} is the equivalent capacitance of capacitors that are in series
  • Ci{C_i} is the capacitance of each capacitor in series
