Atoms

Atoms are the building blocks of the world around us, but what is inside an atom? Atoms consist of a positively charged nucleus, made up of positively charged protons and neutrally charged neutrons, which are surrounded by negatively charged electrons. An ion is an atom that has a nonzero net charge. The charge of a proton and an electron are the same in magnitude but different in sign, so in order for an atom to be an ion, it must have a different amount of protons and electrons.
