Effects of Denaturation on Enzyme Activity
Denaturation occurs when the protein structure of an enzyme is disrupted, leading to the loss of its functional shape. Without its proper structure, the active site may no longer bind substrates effectively, eliminating the enzyme’s ability to catalyze reactions. Factors such as extreme temperatures or pH levels can cause denaturation by breaking the weak bonds that maintain the enzyme's shape. For example, exposure to high heat can permanently unfold an enzyme, rendering it inactive and halting critical biochemical processes.
