Imagine you just got your first paycheck. After covering a few necessities, you have some money left over. What do you do with it? Spend it now, or save it for something bigger later-like a car, college, or an emergency? This is the kind of decision that people face all the time, and it's at the heart of what it means to save.

Most people earn money by working for a business, nonprofit, or government agency. They use that income to buy things they need or want-like food, clothes, or streaming services. But saving means not spending all of it right away. Instead, it's about preparing for the future. Some people earn money by other methods, such as self-employment, rental properties, government programs, investments, and retirement accounts.

Saving can help people afford big purchases, like a down payment on a house or tuition for college. It can also act as a financial cushion in case of emergencies, such as job loss, car repairs, or medical bills. And for many, it's a long-term strategy for retirement -when they will no longer have a paycheck coming in regularly.
