Average Rate of Change

In Unit 1.1 of AP Calculus AB/BC, you start by thinking about how a quantity changes over an interval. The average rate of change tells you how much a function changes between two inputs. It is calculated using:

f(b)−f(a)b−a\frac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a}

This represents the slope of the line connecting two points on the graph. If the function represents position over time, then this value is the average velocity. It does not tell you what is happening at a specific moment, only over the entire interval.
