Quantifying Le Chȃtlier’s Principle

Le Chȃtlier’s Principle can be quantified using the principles of Q vs. K as discussed in previous lessons. Depending on the stress, the Q will either increase or decrease, leading to a shift in the reaction either to the reactants or the products, respectively. For most stresses, they will only change the value of Q, leaving K to be a constant. However, changes in temperature will actively change K, since the K is only valid at a certain temperature. However, you can still use the change in Q to determine which way the reaction will shift as the change in K will be negligible compared to K.
