Simple Random Sample (SRS)

A simple random sample (SRS)

How to select an SRS:

  1. Assign a unique number to each individual in the population
  2. Use a random number table or calculator to select n{n} numbers
  3. The individuals with those numbers form the sample

Properties of SRS:

  • Every individual has an equal chance of selection
  • Every possible sample of size n{n} has an equal chance
  • No bias in selection
  • Results are representative (on average)

Example: To sample 50 students from a school of 800, assign numbers 001-800 and use a random number generator.
