The PHANTOMS Framework

A complete hypothesis test uses the PHANTOMS structure:

  • Parameter: Define in context (p{p} = true proportion of...)
  • Hypotheses: State H0{H_0} and Ha{H_a}
  • Assumptions/Conditions: Check random, independence, large counts
  • Name the test: One-proportion z-test
  • Test statistic: Compute z{z}
  • Obtain p-value: Compute using appropriate tail
  • Make a decision: Compare p-value to α{\alpha}
  • State conclusion: Write in context
