Music frequently uses divination to heighten drama, express fear of destiny, or reveal character. In Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen the Trio des Cartes shows three women reading their futures in cards. Two receive happy predictions of romance. Carmen draws death and accepts the future with calm certainty. The audience knows this fate will come true. Bizet uses prophecy to create suspense and deepen the tragic story.
